Animals play an important role in all Martial Arts. Legend has it that a Buddhist named Daruma walked from India into Northern China (502-550 A.D.) where he settled at the Shaolin Monastery and began teaching the monks exercises that would help in their meditations. It was here that Bodhidharma and the Shaolin Monks gave birth to the Martial Arts. Many of the arts today originated through their studies of animals in nature. How different animals took unique approaches in defending themselves led to the creation of many modern styles today.
